In her own words…

Where are you from?
I grew up in Washington state, a ferry-ride from Seattle, which is where I went to university (BS in Applied Math & MBA, both from the University of Washington) and also where I started my career in banking. Since then, I’ve lived in Houston and LA, spent more than a decade in the San Francisco Bay Area, and currently call Milwaukee home.

Do you have a favorite chart type?
If I were stranded on a desert island and only had a single graph with me, it would definitely be a bar chart. They are versatile and common—in other words, they can be used in a lot of situations, and people generally understand how to read them. Get rid of the clutter, focus sparingly with color, and add a takeaway title, and you’ll have a winning bar chart nearly every time.

What inspired your interest in visualization?
I’ve always been drawn to the place where math and business intersect, and learned early in my career that turning data into pictures—graphs—can make it more understandable and accessible. I love that I get to teach others this superpower through my work!

How do you spend your time outside of work?
With my kids and husband, traveling, cooking, drawing, reading, and enjoying life in the Midwest.
